Teacher Cleared Of Raping Student In Car

Malcolm Layfield, 63, showed no emotion as he was acquitted of one count of rape but his son and daughter burst into tears in the public gallery when the verdict was read out. The former part-time tutor at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) admitted a number of "inappropriate" consensual sexual relationships with students in the 1980s while he was married. The relationships were said to be "common knowledge" in classical musical circles in Manchester and further afield, his trial at Manchester Crown Court heard.
