The approval of the first new grammar school in 50 years has been defended by the Education Secretary, who has said it simply extension of any existing school - 10 miles away. Grammar schools were outlawed in 1998 when Labour banned the creation of new selective state schools. The new school in Sevenoaks is officially an annexe of the all-girls Weald of Kent Grammar School in Tonbridge.
