Education Pledges At Heart Of Osborne's Budget

George Osborne will announce that schools in England will stay open for longer each day, as part of the Budget. The Government estimates the move will allow one in four secondary schools to plan the structure and duration of their school day on the basis of what works best for their pupils. The move towards academies follows David Cameron's pledge in his Tory conference speech last October to make schools accountable to elected local councils "a thing of the past".
