Children are consuming half of their sugar allowance for the entire day during breakfast alone, health officials have claimed. Guidelines suggest four to six-year-old children should have no more than five cubes of sugar a day in their diet, increasing to six cubes a day for seven to ten-year-olds. Data from the National Child Measurement Programme shows more than a fifth of children are already overweight or obese when they start primary school - increasing to a third of 11-year-olds who are beginning high school.
