George Osborne says the North needs better schools

George Osborne implicitly criticised Theresa May's education reforms as he warned schools in the North of England were in need of "urgent attention" if the UK has any hope of closing the North/South divide. The former chancellor told Sky News that the schooling policy that "has to my mind worked best" is the academy programme and reiterated his lack of enthusiasm for the Prime Minister's grammar school revival. Mr Osborne said dealing with the below-par schools, and stemming a graduate brain drain from the north was crucial to rebalancing the economy away from London and the South East.
