In the central hall of the National Gallery in London hangs a 16th century portrait which probably does not feature on any of the greatest hits or must-sees lists wielded by visitors. The formal title of this somewhat muted painting by Giovanni Battista Moroni is "A Knight with his Jousting Helmet", but it is better known as "piede ferito", or "wounded foot".
