Cecil Rhodes Statue To Stay At Oxford College

A statue of Cecil Rhodes will not be removed from the front of an Oxford college despite a campaign to have it taken down amid claims it represented racism and oppression. The authorities at Oriel College said the decision to keep the figure of the British imperialist - viewed by some as the founding father of Apartheid - was taken after "careful consideration". Activists argued it symbolised institutional racism and had called on Oxford to follow the example of the University of Cape Town which pulled down its statue of Cecil Rhodes last year, following a student protest.
